Infant industry argument

The claim that temporary trade protection can help new domestic industries develop until they can compete with established foreign producers.

Learning by doing: Productivity gains that arise as workers and firms accumulate production experience. Protected firms may lower costs through accumulated experience before facing full foreign competition.
Alexander Hamilton: American statesman and first secretary of the Treasury, who advocated policies to foster domestic manufactures. His 1791 manufacturing report made a prominent case for nurturing new American industries.
