Infantry square

An infantry square is a compact formation in which troops face outward on every side to resist attacks from multiple directions, especially cavalry charges.

Volley fire: A firing method in which soldiers discharge their weapons together or in coordinated groups. Coordinated volleys let each face deliver concentrated fire toward an approaching threat.
Pike square: A dense formation of pikemen presenting spear points in multiple directions. Its all-sided defense against mounted attack anticipated the tactical logic of the infantry square.
Battle of the Pyramids: A 1798 battle in Egypt in which French forces under Napoleon defeated Mamluk cavalry and infantry. French divisions formed large squares to meet the Mamluk cavalry attacks.
Line infantry tactics: Tactics that deploy infantry in long, relatively shallow lines to maximize coordinated fire. A line concentrated fire forward, while a square divided its frontage to face threats from every direction.
Discipline (military): The training and obedience that enable armed forces to act reliably under orders. A square could collapse if soldiers broke ranks or failed to hold their assigned face.
Bayonet: A blade designed to attach to the muzzle of a firearm for close combat. Fixed bayonets helped make the outward-facing ranks physically difficult for cavalry to penetrate.
Thirty Years' War: A European conflict fought from 1618 to 1648 involving dynastic, religious, and political rivalries. Its shifting armies and tactical experiments helped shape early modern infantry practice.
Battle of Waterloo: An 1815 battle in Belgium where a coalition army defeated Napoleon's forces. British and allied infantry squares helped withstand French cavalry assaults.
Column (formation): A military arrangement in which troops form deep ranks behind a narrow front. Columns moved and attacked differently, but exposed their flanks to cavalry in ways squares sought to prevent.
Musket: A long-barreled firearm that was loaded from the muzzle and widely used by infantry before breech-loading rifles. The square's defensive value depended partly on the limited range and slow firing of contemporary firearms.
