Inferior ovary

An inferior ovary is positioned below the attachment points of the other floral organs. This position distinguishes it from a superior ovary and reflects how the flower’s parts are arranged around the gynoecium.

Ovary (botany): The flower structure containing ovules that develop into seeds after fertilization. Inferiority describes the ovary’s position within this reproductive structure.
Superior ovary: An ovary positioned above the attachment points of the other floral organs. It is the direct positional opposite of an inferior ovary.
Floral meristem: A determinate shoot meristem that produces the organs of a flower. Its growth patterns establish the relative positions of the ovary and surrounding organs.

Gynoecium: The collective female reproductive organs of a flower, consisting of one or more carpels. An inferior ovary is the basal part of the gynoecium, enclosed by surrounding floral tissues.
Hypogynous flower: A flower whose sepals, petals, and stamens attach below a superior ovary. Its organ arrangement contrasts with flowers bearing an inferior ovary.
