Inflationary epoch

The inflationary epoch is a hypothesized early period of rapid, approximately exponential cosmic expansion, preceding the hot Big Bang phase. It helps explain the universe’s large-scale uniformity, near-flat geometry, and primordial density fluctuations.

Cosmic scale factor: A quantity describing how distances between comoving points in the universe change with cosmic time. Its rapid growth during inflation expresses the expansion the epoch proposes.
General relativity: Einstein’s theory of gravity, in which matter and energy shape spacetime geometry. Inflationary expansion is modeled using relativistic equations for the evolving universe.
Alan Guth: American theoretical physicist who introduced the original inflationary-universe scenario in 1980. His proposal aimed to address the horizon and flatness problems through an early burst of expansion.
Starobinsky inflation: An inflationary model driven by a quadratic correction to the Einstein–Hilbert gravitational action. It is a well-studied realization whose predictions agree closely with current CMB measurements.
Primordial gravitational wave: A gravitational wave generated in the early universe, potentially leaving a distinctive polarization pattern in the cosmic microwave background. Detecting its inflationary imprint would constrain the energy scale of inflation.
Cosmological horizon: A limit on how far signals can travel to or from an observer in an expanding universe. Inflation can place widely separated regions within a shared pre-inflationary causal domain.
Friedmann equations: Equations derived from general relativity that govern the expansion of a homogeneous, isotropic universe. They relate the universe’s expansion rate to the energy driving inflation.
Andrei Linde: Russian-American theoretical physicist who developed chaotic and eternal inflation scenarios. His work broadened inflation beyond the original short-lived, first-order-transition model.
Chaotic inflation: A class of inflationary models in which scalar-field evolution begins from large initial field values. It exemplifies how simple inflaton potentials can produce a prolonged period of expansion.
Tensor-to-scalar ratio: The ratio of primordial gravitational-wave power to primordial density-perturbation power. Its measured value would sharply distinguish among inflationary models.
