Inflorescence

An inflorescence is a plant’s arrangement of flowers on a shared axis or system of branches. Its structure determines how flowers are positioned and develop.

Flower: A reproductive structure of flowering plants, typically containing organs that produce gametes and facilitate seed formation. An inflorescence is built from flowers arranged along shared axes.
Indeterminate growth: Continued growth in which a shoot tip remains capable of producing new organs. An indeterminate main axis can keep extending while lateral flowers open.
Raceme: An unbranched inflorescence with stalked flowers arranged along an elongated main axis. It exemplifies an indeterminate axis bearing flowers on individual stalks.
Pollination syndrome: A set of floral traits associated with pollination by a particular group of animals or by wind. Flower clustering can shape how pollinators encounter and move among flowers.
Solitary flower: A single flower borne separately rather than as part of a flower cluster. It lacks the shared floral axis or branching system that defines an inflorescence.
Pedicel: The stalk that attaches an individual flower to an inflorescence axis. Pedicels distinguish stalked flowers from sessile flowers within a cluster.
Determinate growth: Growth that ends when a shoot tip becomes a flower or otherwise stops producing new organs. A terminal flower ends the main axis and shapes determinate clusters.
Spike: An unbranched inflorescence with sessile flowers attached directly to an elongated axis. It contrasts with a raceme by lacking individual flower stalks.
Pollinator: An animal that transfers pollen between flowers, enabling fertilization in plants. Inflorescence shape and display affect pollinator attraction and foraging.
Racemose inflorescence: An inflorescence with an indeterminate main axis that continues growing as flowers develop. This broad structural group contrasts with clusters whose main axis terminates in a flower.
