Knowra Information and communications technology Information and communications technology Information and communications technology (ICT) comprises technologies used to create, store, process, transmit, and exchange information, including computing systems, telecommunications, and digital networks.
Computer : A programmable electronic or mechanical machine that processes data according to instructions. Computers perform the storage, processing, and creation tasks at ICT’s core.
Cloud computing : The on-demand delivery of computing resources and services over a network, usually the Internet. It lets organizations access ICT infrastructure without owning all the underlying hardware.
Digital divide : Unequal access to, use of, or benefits from digital technologies and networks. Differences in ICT access can deepen existing economic and social inequalities.
Open-source software : Software whose source code is made available under licenses permitting inspection and, under conditions, modification and redistribution. It contrasts with proprietary ICT software by allowing users to inspect and adapt code.
Artificial intelligence : The field of creating computational systems that perform tasks associated with human intelligence. AI increasingly depends on ICT infrastructure and changes how information is processed.
Computer network : A group of interconnected computing devices that exchange data through communication links. Networks connect ICT devices and enable shared services and information exchange.
E-commerce : The buying and selling of goods or services through electronic networks. Online commerce depends on ICT for transactions, catalogs, payments, and coordination.
Digital literacy : The ability to use digital technologies effectively, critically, and safely. Access to ICT alone does not ensure people can use it meaningfully.
Proprietary software : Software controlled by an owner whose license restricts access, modification, or redistribution. Its restrictions contrast with open-source approaches to building and sharing ICT.
Data sovereignty : The principle that data is subject to the laws and governance of the jurisdiction where it is collected or stored. Cross-border ICT services complicate which governments and communities control data.
