Information freedom

Information freedom is the ability to seek, receive, and share information with limited unjustified barriers. It includes access to sources and the ability to communicate ideas.

Freedom of expression: The right to hold opinions and communicate ideas without undue interference. Information freedom draws on expression rights but also covers receiving and seeking information.
Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: The UDHR provision protecting the freedom to hold opinions and seek, receive, and impart information and ideas. It states the core international human-rights formulation of information freedom.
National security: The protection of a state and its population from threats to their safety and sovereignty. Governments invoke security to justify some restrictions on information.
Digital divide: The gap between people who have effective access to digital technologies and those who do not. Unequal connectivity makes formal information rights unequal in practice.
Access to information: The practical and legal ability to obtain information from relevant sources. Information freedom depends on access, not merely permission to speak.
Freedom of Information Act 2000: A United Kingdom law granting public access to recorded information held by public authorities, with exemptions. It illustrates how a broad principle becomes a statutory access process.
Right to privacy: The human right to protection against unjustified interference in private life and personal data. Privacy can constrain disclosure even when information access is otherwise protected.
Transparency (behavior): The disclosure of relevant information about decisions, actions, or organizational processes. Information freedom enables scrutiny of institutions through transparency.
Media freedom: The ability of media organizations and journalists to gather and publish information independently. Independent media provide channels for investigating and sharing information.
Censorship: The suppression or restriction of expression and information by authorities or other powerful actors. It is a direct barrier to seeking, receiving, and sharing information.
