Infraspecific name

An infraspecific name is a scientific name for a taxon ranked below species, such as a subspecies, variety, or form. Its rank is indicated by a connecting term or abbreviation.

Binomial nomenclature: A system that names species with two words: a genus name followed by a specific epithet. Infraspecific names extend this two-part species name with an additional epithet and rank marker.
Trinomial nomenclature: A naming format using three name elements, commonly genus, species epithet, and subspecific epithet. It is the standard format for expressing a zoological subspecies name.
Cultivar: A cultivated plant grouping selected for particular traits and maintained through propagation. Cultivar names follow a separate cultivated-plant code rather than botanical infraspecific-rank rules.

Subspecific epithet: The epithet that follows the species name in a trinomial naming a subspecies. It supplies the distinguishing element in the most familiar infraspecific name.
