Inland waterway

An inland waterway is a navigable river, canal, or lake system used to transport people and goods within a continent. Its routes connect inland communities and industries to one another and to seaports.

Lock (water navigation): A gated chamber that raises or lowers vessels between sections of water at different levels. Locks let boats pass through elevation changes that would otherwise interrupt an inland route.
Inland port: A port located away from the coast that serves inland transport and cargo transfers. Inland ports connect waterborne freight with road, rail, and nearby industries.
