Insect collecting

Insect collecting is the gathering and preservation of insects for study, display, or personal collections. It uses methods such as trapping, pinning, and storing specimens.

Insect net: A handheld net designed to catch insects in flight or among vegetation. Sweeping or aerial nets capture insects that would be difficult to pick up by hand.
Entomology: The scientific study of insects. Insect collecting supplies specimens and observations used in entomological research.
Museum collection: A systematically maintained assemblage of objects held for research, education, or public access. Museum insect holdings preserve specimens as long-term scientific reference material.
Biodiversity monitoring: The repeated measurement of biological diversity to detect changes over time. Comparable specimens from different years can reveal shifts in insect communities.
Insect photography: The photographic documentation of insects in their habitats or under controlled conditions. Photography records appearance and behavior without necessarily removing an insect.
Pitfall trap: A container sunk into the ground to capture small animals moving across the surface. It samples ground-dwelling insects without requiring each specimen to be spotted.
Insect identification: The process of determining an insect's taxonomic identity from its features and evidence. Identification gives a specimen a meaningful name and place in biological records.
Citizen science: Scientific research conducted with contributions from members of the public. Amateur collectors can supply observations and specimens to broader studies.
Extinction: The permanent loss of a species when its last individual dies. Concern about rare species has led collectors to weigh scientific value against removal risks.
Insect rearing: The raising of insects through some or all stages of their life cycle. Rearing produces observations and life-history evidence rather than relying only on wild-caught specimens.
