Insect repellents

Insect repellents are substances applied to skin, clothing, or other surfaces to discourage insects from approaching or landing. They reduce contact without necessarily killing insects.

Olfaction in insects: Insect olfaction is the detection and processing of airborne chemical signals by sensory organs. Many repellents interfere with the odor cues insects use to locate hosts.
Mosquito control: Mosquito control comprises measures that reduce mosquito populations, bites, or pathogen transmission. Personal repellents are a frontline way to prevent mosquito bites during outdoor exposure.
Insecticides: Insecticides are substances used to kill insects or disrupt their development. Repellents primarily deter contact, while insecticides are intended to kill or impair insects.
N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide: N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide is the chemical name of the repellent commonly called DEET. The U.S. military developed DEET for field use before its adoption in civilian repellents.
DEET: DEET is a synthetic chemical used in topical insect repellents against mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting arthropods. It is the best-known topical repellent and has more than one proposed sensory mechanism.
Tick-borne disease: Tick-borne diseases are illnesses transmitted to humans or animals through tick bites. Repellents on skin or clothing can reduce tick contact and lower exposure risk.
Insect screens: Insect screens are mesh barriers fitted over openings to prevent insects from passing through. Screens block entry physically instead of changing insects’ responses to chemical cues.
United States Department of Agriculture: The United States Department of Agriculture is a federal agency responsible for agriculture, food, and related research. USDA research in the 1940s helped identify chemicals for military insect-repellent use.
Picaridin: Picaridin is a synthetic insect-repellent ingredient used on skin and clothing. It offers an alternative to DEET with comparable protection against several biting insects.
Permethrin-treated clothing: Permethrin-treated clothing is fabric treated with an insecticide that kills or incapacitates insects on contact. It complements skin-applied repellents by protecting fabric and targeting ticks that crawl across it.
