Insect wing

An insect wing is a paired outgrowth of the thorax, supported by veins and formed from the body wall. Wings power flight in many insects and may also serve in display, protection, sound production, or heat regulation.

Insect thorax: The middle body region of an insect, bearing the legs and, in winged insects, the wings. The thorax bears the wing pairs and anchors their flight muscles.
Insect flight: Powered aerial locomotion by insects, produced through repeated movements of one or two wing pairs. Wing structure is shaped by the demands of lift, thrust, and maneuvering.
Elytron: A hardened forewing of beetles that covers and protects the hindwings and abdomen. Beetles retain flight-capable hindwings beneath protective forewings.
Insect wing development: The formation of insect wings from imaginal tissues during embryonic and postembryonic development. Developmental patterns help explain how wing structures are built and altered.
Insect acoustic communication: The production and reception of sound by insects for signaling and other behaviors. Some insects use wing movement or wing structures to generate signals.
Insect cuticle: The layered external skeleton of insects, made chiefly of chitin and proteins. Wings are thin extensions of the cuticle rather than soft tissue appendages.
Insect wingbeat: One repeated cycle of an insect’s wing motion, usually comprising downstroke and upstroke. The wingbeat determines how a wing generates and redirects aerodynamic forces.
Hemelytron: A forewing of many true bugs, hardened near its base and membranous near its tip. True bugs divide the forewing into protective and flight-supporting regions.
Pterygota: The clade of insects whose members are winged or descended from winged ancestors. Insect wings define the major evolutionary radiation represented by this group.
Stridulation: Sound production by rubbing one body part against another. Several insects produce sounds by rubbing a wing against a leg or another wing.
