Insecticide-treated net

A bed net treated with insecticide that blocks mosquitoes from reaching sleepers and can kill or repel mosquitoes that contact it.

Long-lasting insecticidal net: A factory-treated mosquito net designed to retain effective insecticide activity through repeated use and washing. This durable form provides protection without routine retreatment.
Malaria prevention: Measures that reduce malaria transmission or prevent illness caused by malaria parasites. Preventing malaria is the principal public-health use of insecticide-treated nets.
Ronald Ross: A British physician who demonstrated malaria parasite development in mosquitoes in the late nineteenth century. His findings established mosquitoes as targets for malaria prevention.
Malaria eradication: The permanent worldwide reduction of malaria transmission to zero through deliberate intervention. Nets reduce transmission but do not by themselves establish eradication.
Pyrethroid: A class of synthetic insecticides that disrupts insect voltage-gated sodium channels. Pyrethroids have been widely used on nets because they affect mosquitoes on contact.

Insecticide resistance: An inherited ability of pests to survive doses of an insecticide that once killed them. Resistance can weaken the insecticidal contribution to net protection.
Anopheles: A genus of mosquitoes that includes the vectors of human malaria. Many malaria-transmitting Anopheles mosquitoes bite at night, when people are under nets.
