Insectivore

An animal that eats primarily or entirely insects and other small invertebrates. Insectivory occurs across many unrelated animal groups.

Anteater: A mammal specialized for eating ants and termites, often using a long tongue and powerful claws. Anteaters are conspicuous mammalian specialists in social insects.
Insect: An arthropod with three pairs of legs, a body divided into head, thorax, and abdomen, and usually wings. Insects are the defining prey named by the word insectivore.
Echolocation: A biological sensing method in which an animal uses echoes of emitted sounds to locate objects. Some insect-eating bats use echoes to detect flying prey in darkness.
Herbivore: An animal that eats plants or plant-derived material. Plant-based diets contrast with the animal prey central to insectivory.
Aardwolf: A hyena relative that feeds mainly on termites, especially harvester termites. Its narrow termite diet illustrates extreme specialization within mammals.
Invertebrate: An animal without a vertebral column. Many insectivores also eat small invertebrates beyond insects.
Electroreception: The detection of electrical fields generated by other organisms or the environment. The star-nosed mole uses it to help find aquatic invertebrate prey.
Frugivore: An animal whose diet consists mainly of fruit. Fruit eating represents a contrasting dietary specialization.
Pangolin: A scaled mammal that eats ants and termites, capturing them with a long sticky tongue. Pangolins combine an insect diet with distinctive defenses against predators.
Dietary specialization: The evolutionary adaptation of an organism to use a relatively narrow range of foods. Insectivores vary from broad feeders to highly specialized prey hunters.
