Insei

Insei was a Japanese system of rule in which retired emperors exercised political power from cloistered status, often while a reigning emperor occupied the throne.

Cloistered Emperor: A retired Japanese emperor who entered Buddhist orders and continued to exercise political authority. This was the ruler at the center of the insei system.
Emperor Shirakawa: A Japanese emperor who abdicated in 1086 and became the first dominant cloistered ruler of the insei era. His retirement established insei as a sustained system of government.
Heiji Rebellion: A 1159–1160 uprising in Kyoto that ended with the Taira clan’s victory over rival court factions. Its outcome strengthened the warriors who had entered court politics under insei.
Fujiwara regency: A system in which members of the Fujiwara clan governed as regents for child or adult emperors. Unlike insei, this system vested power in the emperor’s maternal relatives.
Emperor of Japan: The hereditary monarch who serves as Japan’s head of state and historically held varying degrees of political power. Insei separated the retired emperor’s authority from the reigning emperor’s position.
Emperor Go-Sanjo: A Japanese emperor who ruled from 1068 to 1073 and challenged Fujiwara influence at court. His reforms and abdication prepared the political conditions for Shirakawa’s rule.
Genpei War: A conflict from 1180 to 1185 between the Taira and Minamoto clans that ended with Taira defeat. The war marked the collapse of the late-Heian order shaped by insei politics.
Shogunate: A Japanese military government headed by a shogun, historically operating alongside the imperial court. Insei was court rule by retired emperors, not a military government led by a shogun.
Heian-kyo: The capital of Japan from 794 to 1868, now known as Kyoto. Insei politics unfolded around the imperial court based in this capital.
Emperor Horikawa: A Japanese emperor who reigned from 1087 to 1107 under the influence of his retired father, Shirakawa. His reign became the first extended test of Shirakawa’s cloistered authority.
