Instrumental chemistry

Instrumental chemistry uses physical instruments to identify substances and measure their chemical properties or amounts, often by detecting how matter interacts with energy or electric fields.

Spectroscopy: The study of how matter interacts with electromagnetic radiation. Many instruments identify compounds by measuring characteristic absorption, emission, or scattering of light.
Analytical chemistry: The science of obtaining, processing, and interpreting information about the composition of matter. Instrumental methods are a central toolkit within this broader discipline.
Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry: An analytical method coupling gas chromatographic separation with mass spectrometric identification. It resolves volatile mixtures and identifies their individual components.
Classical wet chemistry: Chemical analysis using reactions, separations, and stoichiometric measurements rather than instrumental signals. It offers a reaction-based alternative to measuring physical signals with instruments.
Chromatography: A family of methods that separates mixture components through their differing movement between phases. Separating components before detection helps instruments measure complex mixtures.
Analyte: The substance or chemical component whose presence or amount is being measured. Instrument selection and measurement conditions depend on the target analyte.
High-performance liquid chromatography: A liquid chromatographic method that uses pressurized flow through a packed column. It measures nonvolatile compounds in pharmaceuticals, foods, and biological samples.
Gravimetric analysis: A quantitative method that determines an analyte amount from a measured mass. It can quantify substances without relying on an instrument's signal response.
Mass spectrometry: A technique that separates ions by mass-to-charge ratio and measures their abundance. It identifies compounds and measures their amounts from ion signals.
Reference standard: A material with a well-established property or composition used to calibrate or validate measurements. Standards anchor instrument responses to known values.
