Intensive care unit

A hospital department for patients with life-threatening or unstable conditions, providing continuous monitoring and treatments such as mechanical ventilation and organ support.

Mechanical ventilation: Breathing support that moves air into and out of the lungs using a machine. It can sustain gas exchange when critical illness prevents adequate breathing.
Medical intensive care unit: An ICU specializing in severe medical illnesses that do not primarily require surgery. It commonly treats respiratory failure, sepsis, and other acute medical crises.
Critical illness: A severe, potentially life-threatening state in which one or more organ systems fail or risk failing. It is the broad condition that makes intensive care necessary.
Post-intensive care syndrome: New or worsened physical, cognitive, or mental health problems that persist after critical illness and intensive care. Survivors may face lasting effects that begin during an ICU stay.
Hemodynamic monitoring: Measurement of blood flow and cardiovascular pressures to assess circulation and guide treatment. Continuous circulation data can reveal deterioration before visible symptoms appear.
Surgical intensive care unit: An ICU focused on patients recovering from major surgery or facing serious surgical complications. Postoperative patients may need close observation and temporary organ support.
Organ failure: The inability of an organ to perform functions needed to sustain health or life. ICU treatment often supports failing organs while clinicians address the underlying cause.
ICU-acquired weakness: New generalized muscle weakness developing during critical illness, often associated with prolonged immobility and organ support. It can delay recovery and complicate discharge after prolonged intensive care.
Vasopressor: A medication that narrows blood vessels or strengthens heart contractions to raise blood pressure. Vasopressors help maintain organ perfusion when shock causes dangerously low pressure.
Neonatal intensive care unit: A hospital unit providing intensive care to newborns, especially premature or seriously ill infants. Its care is adapted to the distinct physiology and needs of newborns.
