Inter-Parliamentary Union

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is a global organization of national parliaments that promotes dialogue, cooperation, democracy, and peace among parliamentary institutions.

IPU Assembly: The Inter-Parliamentary Union’s principal statutory meeting, where delegations debate issues and adopt resolutions. It brings national parliamentary delegations together to set common positions.
William Randal Cremer: A British pacifist and politician who helped establish the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1889. He co-founded the organization with Frédéric Passy.
Universal Declaration on Democracy: A declaration adopted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1997 setting out principles of democracy. It expresses the democratic standards the organization promotes.
United Nations General Assembly observer status: A status allowing an organization to participate in United Nations General Assembly proceedings without voting. The Union’s observer status gives parliamentary perspectives a place at the UN.
IPU Governing Council: The Inter-Parliamentary Union’s governing body, composed of representatives from member parliaments. It oversees the Union’s work between its assemblies.
Frédéric Passy: A French economist and pacifist who co-founded the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1889. His peace advocacy helped launch the Union’s parliamentary initiative.
Plan of Action for Gender-sensitive Parliaments: An Inter-Parliamentary Union framework for making parliaments more equal and responsive to women and men. It guides work to improve gender equality within parliamentary institutions.
Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe: A Council of Europe body composed of national parliamentarians from member states. Unlike the Union, it is a regional parliamentary assembly within a treaty organization.
IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians: An Inter-Parliamentary Union body that examines cases involving violations of parliamentarians’ human rights. It gives the Union a mechanism for addressing threats to legislators.
Inter-Parliamentary Conference: The recurring international meeting of parliamentarians that became the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s principal assembly. The Union began as a conference for legislators seeking peaceful dispute resolution.
