Interactive art

Interactive art is art that responds to audience actions, allowing participants to influence its form, behavior, or experience.

Human–computer interaction: The study and design of how people interact with computing systems. Interactive artworks use its methods to make audience actions legible to machines.
Rain Room: An installation by Random International in which rainfall pauses around visitors as they move. It makes a participant’s bodily movement directly alter an immersive environment.
Marcel Duchamp: A French-American artist whose readymades and experiments challenged traditional definitions of art. His emphasis on viewer interpretation helped unsettle the idea of a finished, self-contained artwork.
Kinetic art: Art that incorporates actual or perceived movement. Movement can occur without audience input, unlike interaction that responds to participants.
Sensor: A device that detects physical or environmental conditions and converts them into signals. Sensors let an artwork register movement, touch, sound, or other participant input.
The Legible City: A virtual environment by Jeffrey Shaw navigated by riding a stationary bicycle through letter-shaped buildings. Pedaling and steering control movement through a world built from text.
Dada: An avant-garde movement that used absurdity and chance to reject established artistic conventions. Dada’s participatory events and chance procedures anticipated art that depends on audience involvement.
Immersive art: Art that surrounds or envelops audiences in an environment or experience. Immersion concerns sensory enclosure; it does not necessarily let audiences affect the work.
Interaction design: The design of the behavior and feedback of interactive products and systems. Its choices shape how participants discover and understand an artwork’s possible actions.
Very Nervous System: An interactive installation by David Rokeby that translates bodily movement into sound. It turns a participant’s gestures into an evolving musical performance.
