Interlingua

Interlingua is an international auxiliary language introduced in 1951, with vocabulary drawn chiefly from shared Latin and Greek roots in major Western languages. Its grammar was designed to be regular and readily recognizable to speakers of Romance languages.

International auxiliary language: A planned language intended to facilitate communication among people with different native languages. Interlingua was designed to serve this role across national and linguistic boundaries.
International Auxiliary Language Association: An organization founded in 1924 to research and develop an international auxiliary language. It sponsored the research that produced Interlingua.
Interlingua vocabulary: The word stock of Interlingua, selected largely from forms shared by major European languages. Its recognizable vocabulary is the language’s defining practical feature.
Interlingua literature: Original writing and translated works produced in Interlingua, including periodicals and books. Published texts demonstrate how the language functions beyond its reference materials.
Volapük: An international auxiliary language created by Johann Martin Schleyer and published in 1880. Its heavily altered vocabulary contrasts with Interlingua’s preference for recognizable international word forms.
Romance languages: A family of languages descended from spoken Latin, including Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Their shared vocabulary supplies much of Interlingua’s recognizable word stock.
Alexander Gode: A linguist and editor who directed the final development of Interlingua and helped publish it in 1951. He shaped the language’s final form and presented it to the public.
Prototype theory: A method for identifying a representative form from related variants, used in Interlingua’s word-selection process. Interlingua often selects a common form that accounts for recognizable related words.
Panorama in Interlingua: A periodical published in Interlingua that reports on international affairs and language-related topics. It illustrates the language’s use in continuing international communication.
Ido: A constructed auxiliary language introduced in 1907 as a reform of Esperanto. Ido sought regularity through reform, offering a different response to auxiliary-language design problems.
