Intermetallic

An intermetallic is a metallic material made from two or more elements, usually with an ordered crystal structure and a distinct composition range. Its atomic ordering and bonding often give it properties unlike those of ordinary solid-solution alloys.

Crystal structure: The periodic arrangement of atoms in a crystalline solid. Intermetallics are distinguished in part by ordered arrangements of different elements on crystal sites.
Metallic bonding: Chemical bonding in which valence electrons are delocalized across a lattice of metal atoms. Intermetallics retain metallic bonding even when their atoms occupy ordered, chemically distinct sites.
Nickel aluminide: A family of ordered nickel-aluminum intermetallic phases, including Ni₃Al and NiAl. Nickel aluminides are studied for high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance.
Superalloy: A high-performance alloy designed to retain strength and resist degradation at elevated temperatures. Superalloys often outperform brittle intermetallics in applications requiring sustained mechanical deformation.
Intermetallic compound: A compound of metallic elements with a characteristic composition and often an ordered crystal structure. The term identifies the compound phases that make up much of the intermetallic materials field.
Chemical ordering: The preferential occupation of distinct crystallographic sites by different atomic species. It describes the atomic arrangement that gives many intermetallic phases their defining structure.
Long-range order: A pattern in which structural correlations persist across large distances in a material. Long-range chemical order separates an ordered intermetallic from a compositionally similar disordered phase.
Titanium aluminide: An intermetallic alloy based chiefly on titanium and aluminum, commonly containing the γ-TiAl phase. Its low density and high-temperature capability support aerospace and automotive applications.
Ceramic: An inorganic, nonmetallic solid whose properties arise chiefly from ionic or covalent bonding. Ceramics can share intermetallics’ heat resistance but differ in bonding and electrical behavior.
Hume-Rothery rules: Empirical guidelines relating alloy composition and atomic properties to the formation of solid solutions and phases. These rules helped explain why particular compositions form distinct intermetallic structures.
