Internal bleeding

Internal bleeding is blood loss from damaged blood vessels that collects inside the body rather than escaping through an external wound. It can occur in body cavities, organs, or tissues and may become life-threatening before it is visible.

Hemorrhage: Blood escapes from damaged blood vessels into the body or outside it. Internal bleeding is hemorrhage contained within the body.
Blunt trauma: Injury caused by impact without an object penetrating the body. Impacts can rupture vessels and organs while leaving the skin unbroken.
Gastrointestinal bleeding: Bleeding from any part of the digestive tract, from the esophagus to the rectum. Digestive-tract blood loss may remain internal or appear later in vomit or stool.
External bleeding: Blood loss that escapes through a wound or other opening in the body. Unlike internal bleeding, the blood is directly visible outside the body.
Hypovolemic shock: A life-threatening state caused by insufficient circulating blood volume. Severe internal blood loss can leave organs without adequate blood flow.
Abdominal trauma: Injury to the abdomen that may damage organs, blood vessels, or the abdominal wall. The abdomen is a frequent site of concealed bleeding after injury.
Ectopic pregnancy: A pregnancy implanted outside the uterine cavity, most often in a fallopian tube. Rupture can cause rapid bleeding into the abdomen.
Occult blood: Blood present in a bodily sample but not visible to the unaided eye. This hidden trace differs from blood accumulating within body tissues or cavities.
Hemostasis: The coordinated process that stops bleeding through vessel constriction, platelets, and clotting proteins. It is the body's normal response that can limit internal blood loss.
Intracranial hemorrhage: Bleeding within the skull, including bleeding in brain tissue or surrounding spaces. Bleeding inside the skull can compress the brain without visible external blood loss.
