Internal resistance to apartheid

Internal resistance to apartheid was opposition within South Africa to the system of racial segregation and white minority rule, expressed through political organizing, protest, labor action, and armed struggle.

Defiance Campaign: A 1952 campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience against apartheid laws, organized by the African National Congress and its allies. Its coordinated law-breaking demonstrated the reach of mass nonviolent resistance.
African National Congress: A South African political organization founded in 1912 to oppose racial discrimination and secure political rights for the Black majority. It became the largest liberation movement and led both mass campaigns and armed struggle.
Umkhonto we Sizwe: The armed wing established by the African National Congress in 1961 to conduct sabotage against apartheid institutions. Its formation marked the ANC’s turn from exclusively nonviolent methods to armed resistance.
Apartheid: A system of racial classification, segregation, and white minority rule imposed in South Africa from 1948 until the early 1990s. Resistance targeted the laws and institutions that sustained this system.
Sharpeville massacre: The 1960 killing of 69 people by police during a protest against pass laws in Sharpeville, South Africa. The massacre intensified repression and helped push resistance movements toward new strategies.

Soweto uprising: A 1976 student uprising in Soweto against the enforcement of Afrikaans as a language of instruction. Student protests sparked a wider cycle of resistance and state violence.
Pan Africanist Congress: A South African liberation movement founded in 1959 after breaking away from the African National Congress. Its anti-pass campaign preceded the Sharpeville massacre and its own turn to armed resistance.
