International Air Transport Association

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a trade association for the world’s airlines that develops industry standards and supports cooperation on air transport.

IATA airport code: A three-letter code assigned by IATA to identify an airport or other location in travel systems. These codes are among IATA’s most visible standards in airline bookings and passenger documents.
IATA Clearing House: A settlement system that offsets and settles financial transactions among airlines and other travel-industry participants. It shows how IATA reduces the burden of settling large volumes of interline transactions.
International Air Traffic Association: An association of European airlines founded in 1919 to coordinate international air services and related commercial practices. It was IATA’s predecessor, established before the modern association formed after World War II.
Airlines for America: A trade association representing major United States airlines and related aviation businesses. It represents a national airline industry, while IATA’s membership and remit are global.
Interline agreement: An agreement allowing airlines to handle passengers or cargo across services operated by different carriers. IATA procedures and settlement systems help make interline travel workable across airlines.
IATA airline designator: A two-character code assigned by IATA to identify an airline in schedules, tickets, and reservation systems. The designators give airlines standardized identifiers across commercial systems.
Billing and Settlement Plan: A system through which travel agents report and remit sales of airline tickets to participating airlines. IATA operates BSP systems that standardize ticket-sales reporting and settlement.
Havana Conference of 1945: A meeting of international airlines in Havana in 1945 that led to the establishment of the modern IATA. The conference was the founding event that created the present association.
Association of European Airlines: A former trade association representing European airlines, dissolved in 2016. Its regional scope and closure distinguish it from IATA’s continuing global organization.
Electronic ticket: A digital record of an airline ticket stored in an airline’s reservation system rather than issued as a paper coupon. IATA-led industry coordination helped standardize the transition from paper tickets to electronic ticketing.
