International auxiliary language

An international auxiliary language is intended to help people with different native languages communicate without replacing their first languages.

Constructed language: A language whose features are deliberately designed rather than developed solely through ordinary community transmission. International auxiliary languages are one purpose-built branch of language construction.
Esperanto: A planned language created by L. L. Zamenhof and published in 1887, now used by an international community. It is the most widely known and continuously used planned auxiliary language.
English as a lingua franca: The use of English as a shared language among people with different first languages. Its global reach makes it the strongest practical alternative to a deliberately neutral auxiliary language.
Johann Martin Schleyer: A German Catholic priest who created Volapük in the late nineteenth century. His project helped turn auxiliary-language design into an organized international movement.
Esperanto movement: An international network of Esperanto speakers, organizations, publications, and cultural events. Its sustained community demonstrates that a planned language can become a medium of social life.
Interlinguistics: The study of planned languages, their design, use, and role in communication among language communities. It provides the scholarly framework for evaluating auxiliary-language proposals.
Volapük: A planned language created by Johann Martin Schleyer and launched in 1879. Its early international movement illustrates both rapid uptake and the fragility of adoption.
Natural language: A language that develops through use within a speech community rather than being wholly designed in advance. Auxiliary-language advocates often contrast planned regularity with the histories and irregularities of natural languages.
L. L. Zamenhof: A Polish-Jewish ophthalmologist who created Esperanto and published it in 1887. His language became the movement's most enduring example and shaped its humanist ideals.
Language education: The teaching and learning of languages through formal instruction and other organized methods. Auxiliary-language proposals compete with the time and resources devoted to foreign-language education.
