Knowra International Council on Monuments and Sites International Council on Monuments and Sites The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) is a nongovernmental organization that promotes the conservation of cultural heritage and advises UNESCO on World Heritage nominations.
World Heritage Convention : A 1972 international treaty establishing cooperation to identify, protect, and conserve cultural and natural heritage of outstanding universal value. It provides the treaty framework under which ICOMOS advises UNESCO on cultural heritage nominations.
UNESCO : A United Nations agency that promotes international cooperation in education, science, culture, and communication. ICOMOS is independent of UNESCO but advises it on cultural heritage matters.
Venice Charter : A 1964 international charter setting out principles for the conservation and restoration of monuments and sites. Its adoption helped establish the professional framework from which ICOMOS developed.
World Heritage Site : A property inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its outstanding universal value. ICOMOS evaluates cultural properties before their possible inscription.
UNESCO World Heritage Committee : The intergovernmental committee that makes decisions under the World Heritage Convention, including inscription of properties on the World Heritage List. Unlike ICOMOS, it has decision-making authority over World Heritage inscriptions.
World Heritage Committee : The intergovernmental body that implements the World Heritage Convention and decides which nominated properties enter the World Heritage List. It considers ICOMOS evaluations when deciding cultural-site nominations.
Cultural Heritage : Inherited material objects, places, practices, and knowledge that communities value and transmit across generations. ICOMOS’s conservation work concerns cultural heritage in its varied forms.
Second International Congress of Architects and Technicians of Historic Monuments : A 1964 Venice meeting that adopted the Venice Charter and proposed creating an international conservation organization. Its participants initiated the process that led to ICOMOS’s founding.
Historic Centre of Vienna : The historic core of Austria’s capital, inscribed on the World Heritage List and placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2017. ICOMOS assessments informed international scrutiny of development pressures affecting this cultural property.
Blue Shield International : An international organization dedicated to protecting cultural heritage during armed conflict and disasters. Its operational focus on emergency protection differs from ICOMOS’s broad advisory and conservation role.
