International Mathematical Union

The International Mathematical Union is a worldwide organization that promotes cooperation among mathematicians and supports the development of mathematics. It organizes the International Congress of Mathematicians and awards several major mathematical prizes.

International Congress of Mathematicians: A quadrennial global meeting where mathematicians present research and the Fields Medals are awarded. The Union organizes this congress as its largest recurring gathering.
National mathematical society: An organization that represents and serves mathematicians within a country. National societies and academies form the Union's member bodies.
International Mathematical Union (1920–1932): The original International Mathematical Union, founded after World War I and dissolved in 1932. Its brief existence preceded the present Union and exposed the costs of politicizing scientific membership.
Abel Prize: An international mathematics prize awarded annually by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Unlike the Union's Fields Medal, the Abel Prize has no age limit and is not awarded by the Union.

Abacus Medal: An International Mathematical Union prize recognizing outstanding contributions to mathematical aspects of information technology. The Union established this prize to recognize work at the boundary of mathematics and computing.
International Science Council: An international nongovernmental organization that brings together scientific unions and national science organizations. The Union is a member of this umbrella organization for global science.
