International organization

An institution established by multiple states or other members to pursue shared goals across borders. It operates through agreed rules, bodies, and continuing cooperation.

International law: The rules and principles governing relations among states and other international actors. International organizations are created and constrained by rules of this broader legal system.
Intergovernmentalism: A form of cooperation in which national governments retain control over collective decisions. Many organizations act through decisions negotiated and approved by their governments.
United Nations: A global intergovernmental organization founded in 1945 to maintain peace and promote international cooperation. It is the broadest general-purpose organization, with agencies and bodies addressing many shared problems.
International non-governmental organization: A private, non-state organization that operates across national borders. Unlike intergovernmental bodies, it is not established by states as members.
Global governance: The rules, institutions, and practices through which shared problems are managed beyond national governments. International organizations are among the main institutions through which global governance operates.
Treaty: A binding agreement between states governed by international law. Many organizations begin with a treaty that defines their purposes, powers, and membership.
Supranationalism: A form of governance in which shared institutions exercise authority above national governments in defined areas. It contrasts with organizations where governments retain the final say.
World Health Organization: A United Nations agency that coordinates international public health work. It shows how a specialized organization coordinates expertise and action across national borders.
Transnational network: A cross-border web of actors linked through communication and cooperation rather than a single formal institution. Networks can coordinate international action without the organization’s formal membership and governing organs.
International norm: A shared expectation about appropriate conduct among states or other international actors. Organizations can formulate, spread, and monitor norms that influence state behavior.
