International school

An international school serves students from multiple national backgrounds or teaches a curriculum designed to cross national education systems. Many use internationally recognized programs and teach in a language other than the host country’s main language.

International Baccalaureate: An educational foundation offering internationally used programs for students aged 3 to 19. Its programs are among the best-known curricula offered by international schools.
Third culture kid: A person who spends a significant part of childhood outside their parents’ culture of origin. International schools often educate children whose lives span several countries and cultural settings.
International School of Geneva: A school founded in Geneva in 1924 to educate children connected with the League of Nations. Its early history illustrates the link between international institutions and international schooling.
National school: A school organized around the curriculum, language, and qualifications of a particular country. Unlike many international schools, it primarily follows the host country’s national system.
Cambridge International Education: A provider of international school curricula, qualifications, and examinations based on the British education tradition. Many international schools use its qualifications alongside or instead of national curricula.
Expatriate: A person living outside their country of citizenship, temporarily or long-term. Families relocating abroad often seek schools that ease educational transitions for their children.
League of Nations: An international organization established after the First World War to promote cooperation and peace. Its Geneva community helped create demand for schooling that crossed national boundaries.
Bilingual education: Education in which two languages are used as media of instruction. Some international schools are multilingual, but bilingual teaching alone does not make a school international.
Accreditation: A formal process by which an organization evaluates whether an institution meets defined standards. External accreditation can signal that a school meets recognized educational and governance standards.
Student mobility: Movement of students between educational institutions, regions, or countries. International schools can provide continuity when a family moves between countries.
