International space cooperation

International space cooperation is collaboration among countries on space science, exploration, infrastructure, and governance, through shared missions, institutions, agreements, and technical standards.

International Space Station: A crewed orbital laboratory operated through a partnership among the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada. Its assembly and long-term operation make it the largest sustained multinational space project.
Intergovernmental organization: An organization established by a treaty among states to pursue agreed purposes. Many durable space partnerships are organized through treaty-based agencies.
International Geophysical Year: A 1957–1958 international scientific program coordinating observations of Earth and its environment. Its coordinated research helped establish scientific collaboration as a purpose of the space age.
Space diplomacy: The use of space programs and negotiations to pursue diplomatic relationships and international policy goals. Joint missions can sustain communication between states despite broader political tensions.
Space resource utilization: The extraction and use of materials found in space, such as lunar water ice or asteroid minerals. States disagree about how resource rights fit with shared treaty obligations.
Hubble Space Telescope: A space observatory built by NASA and the European Space Agency and operated with international scientific participation. Its partnership paired European instruments and contributions with NASA’s servicing missions.
European Space Agency: An intergovernmental organization that coordinates European civilian space programs. It pools member-state resources for missions no single participant would undertake in the same way.
Sputnik 1: The first artificial Earth satellite, launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Its launch accelerated international attention to space science and political competition.
Global navigation satellite system: A satellite constellation that provides positioning, navigation, and timing services over regional or global areas. International coordination and compatibility affect how national navigation systems serve users across borders.
Planetary protection: Policies and practices that prevent biological contamination of celestial bodies and Earth during space missions. International missions need compatible contamination standards to protect scientific value.
