International Typographic Style

A mid-twentieth-century graphic design movement that uses grid-based layouts, sans-serif typography, and asymmetrical composition to communicate clearly and objectively.

Grid (graphic design): A system of intersecting lines that organizes elements on a page. Grids gave designers a repeatable structure for asymmetrical layouts.
Jan Tschichold: A German typographer and designer who advocated functional, asymmetric typography in the 1920s. His earlier New Typography anticipated principles later associated with Swiss design.
Swissair: Switzerland’s former national airline, founded in 1931 and liquidated in 2002. Its mid-century identity used the movement’s restrained typography and structured layouts.
Art Nouveau: An international decorative art movement known for organic lines and ornamental forms. Its flowing ornament contrasts with the movement’s geometric restraint.
International Style (architecture): A modernist architectural style marked by simple forms, functional planning, and minimal ornament. The shared name reflects parallel modernist commitments, not a single design movement.
Sans-serif: A typeface style whose letterforms lack projecting strokes at their ends. Sans-serif faces became the movement’s characteristic typographic voice.
Ernst Keller: A Swiss graphic designer and teacher at Zurich’s School of Arts and Crafts. His teaching emphasized formal clarity and helped establish Swiss graphic design.
Musica Viva: A concert series of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, established in 1941. Müller-Brockmann’s posters for the series made musical structure visible through geometry.
Punk graphic design: A graphic design approach associated with punk culture’s rough, anti-establishment visual language. Its disruption and deliberate irregularity challenge Swiss design’s orderly systems.
Information design: The practice of organizing information so it can be understood and used effectively. The style’s hierarchy and clarity became lasting tools for presenting information.
