Internationalism

Internationalism is the belief that nations and peoples should cooperate or show solidarity across national boundaries. It encompasses political projects ranging from peaceful diplomacy to movements seeking shared institutions or class solidarity.

Enlightenment cosmopolitanism: An Enlightenment ideal that treats human beings as members of a wider moral community beyond their political affiliations. Its universal moral community supplied an early intellectual basis for solidarity beyond nations.
International organization: An institution established by states or other actors to coordinate activity across national borders. International organizations give cooperation durable structures and procedures.
Nationalism: A political principle that treats the nation as a central source of identity and legitimate political authority. It can prioritize national interests where internationalism calls for cross-border commitments.
Comintern: The Communist International, founded in 1919 to coordinate communist parties and promote world revolution. It made revolutionary communist internationalism an organized, Moscow-led movement.
French Revolution: A period of political upheaval in France beginning in 1789 that transformed European politics and spread revolutionary ideals. Revolutionary France promoted universal rights while exporting political change across borders.
International law: The body of rules and principles governing relations among states and other international actors. Shared legal rules translate international cooperation into obligations and standards.
Isolationism: A foreign-policy approach that limits a state's involvement in international affairs. It rejects the sustained external engagement central to many internationalist projects.
League of Nations: An intergovernmental organization founded after World War I to promote peace and collective security. It was an early institutional attempt to replace rivalry with collective security.
First International: The International Workingmen's Association, founded in 1864 to coordinate labor and socialist movements across countries. It turned cross-border worker solidarity into an organized political project.
Multilateralism: The practice of coordinating policy among three or more states through common rules or institutions. It is a practical method for pursuing internationalist cooperation among governments.
