Internet access

Internet access is the ability to connect to and exchange data over the internet, usually through a network service supplied by an internet service provider.

Internet service provider: An organization that provides customers with connectivity to the internet. ISPs operate or purchase the network connections that make internet access available.
Digital subscriber line: A broadband technology that transmits digital data over copper telephone lines. DSL uses existing telephone wiring to provide fixed internet access.
Digital divide: The gap between people and communities with effective access to digital technologies and those without it. Unequal internet availability and affordability are central forms of the digital divide.
Universal service: A public-policy principle that essential communication services should be available to everyone. Universal-service programs aim to extend internet access to underserved communities.
Broadband: High-capacity internet connectivity that supports faster data transmission than traditional narrowband connections. Broadband is the common form of residential internet access.
Cable internet: Broadband internet service delivered over coaxial cable television networks. Cable networks are a major wired alternative to telephone-line broadband.
Net neutrality: The principle that internet service providers should treat internet data without unjust discrimination. Access can be available while provider policies still shape which online services work equally.
Community network: A communications network built, operated, or governed by a local community. Community networks offer locally controlled access where commercial service is absent or inadequate.
Modem: A device that converts data between a local network and signals used by an internet connection. A modem links premises equipment to the access network used by an ISP.
Fiber-optic communication: The transmission of information as light through optical fibers. Fiber connections can provide high capacity and low latency for fixed access.
