Internet Engineering Task Force

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is an open international community that develops voluntary technical standards and specifications for the Internet, primarily through published documents called RFCs.

Request for Comments: A numbered series of technical and informational documents that includes IETF standards and other Internet publications. RFCs are the durable documents through which the IETF publishes its work.
Internet Society: A nonprofit organization that supports the open development and use of the Internet. The Internet Society provides the organizational home for the IETF.
Transmission Control Protocol: A transport protocol that provides reliable, ordered byte streams between networked applications. TCP is a foundational protocol specified and maintained through the IETF standards process.
World Wide Web Consortium: An international standards organization that develops technologies for the World Wide Web. The W3C standardizes many web technologies, while the IETF focuses on Internet protocols and related specifications.
Internet-Draft: A provisional technical document submitted for discussion in the IETF standards process. Proposals typically circulate as Internet-Drafts before becoming RFCs.
Internet Architecture Board: A body that provides architectural oversight and guidance for the Internet’s technical development. The IAB offers architectural oversight alongside the IETF's standards work.
Internet Protocol: The network-layer protocol that carries datagrams between hosts across interconnected networks. IP specifications define the packet delivery foundation that IETF standards build upon.
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers: A professional association that develops standards across electrical engineering, computing, and related fields. IEEE standards include local networking technologies, complementing the IETF's Internet-layer work.
Working group (IETF): A focused IETF team that develops specifications within a defined technical charter. Most detailed standards work is carried out in working groups.
IETF area: An organizational division of IETF work covering a broad technical domain. Areas group related working groups and are overseen by area directors.
