Internet Explorer was Microsoft’s graphical web browser, included with Windows from 1995 until its retirement in 2022. Its long dominance shaped web standards, browser security, and the modern browser market.

Trident: Trident is the browser engine used by Internet Explorer to parse and render web pages. This engine produced Internet Explorer’s page layout and defined much of its standards behavior.
Browser wars: The browser wars were periods of intense competition among web-browser makers, especially in the 1990s and 2000s. Internet Explorer’s rise against Netscape Navigator defined the first browser war.
Spyglass Mosaic: Spyglass Mosaic was a commercial web browser licensed from the creators of NCSA Mosaic. Microsoft licensed Spyglass technology as the starting point for its first Internet Explorer release.
Mozilla Firefox: Mozilla Firefox is a cross-platform web browser developed by Mozilla and its community. Firefox offered an independent alternative as Internet Explorer’s dominance began to weaken.
JScript: JScript is Microsoft’s implementation of the ECMAScript scripting language used in Internet Explorer. Its behavior shaped how JavaScript-heavy sites worked in Microsoft’s browser.
Browser market share: Browser market share measures the proportion of web use attributed to each browser. Internet Explorer became dominant in the early 2000s before its share steadily declined.

ActiveX: ActiveX is a Microsoft technology for reusable software components, including components embedded in web pages. Internet Explorer exposed ActiveX controls, enabling powerful features while creating major security risks.
Web standards: Web standards are shared technical specifications for interoperable websites and browsers. Internet Explorer’s uneven support made cross-browser compatibility a persistent challenge.
