Internet

The Internet is a worldwide system of interconnected computer networks that exchange data using the Internet Protocol suite. It carries services such as the World Wide Web, email, and online voice calls.

Internet Protocol: The network-layer protocol that addresses and routes packets between networks. IP provides the shared addressing and packet-delivery rules that let separate networks interconnect.
ARPANET: An early packet-switched network funded by the U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency. ARPANET supplied a key experimental predecessor to the Internet.
Autonomous system: A group of IP networks and routers managed under one routing policy. The Internet's global routes are exchanged among these independently administered systems.
World Wide Web: A system of interlinked resources accessed over the Internet, commonly through web browsers. The Web is a major Internet service, but it is not the Internet itself.
Digital divide: The gap between people and communities with effective access to digital technologies and those without it. Internet access has become a key source of unequal opportunity and participation.
Transmission Control Protocol: A transport protocol that provides ordered, reliable byte streams between applications. TCP handles reliable delivery for many Internet applications above IP.
Vint Cerf: An American computer scientist who co-designed the TCP/IP protocols with Robert Kahn. Cerf helped define the protocol architecture that enabled networks to interconnect.
Internet service provider: An organization that provides Internet access or related network services. ISPs connect homes, businesses, and other networks to the wider Internet.
Email: A system for exchanging digital messages between networked mailboxes. Email uses Internet protocols to send messages independently of the Web.
Network neutrality: The principle that Internet access providers should treat online traffic without unjust discrimination. Debates over neutrality concern who controls the treatment of traffic across the Internet.
