Interpretatio Graeca

Interpretatio Graeca is the practice of identifying foreign deities with Greek gods perceived to share their roles or attributes. It made unfamiliar religions legible through Greek religious categories.

Interpretatio Germanica: Interpretatio Germanica is the identification of Germanic gods with Roman deities in ancient accounts and later scholarship. It shows how the method could map northern gods onto a different pantheon.
Isis: Isis is an ancient Egyptian goddess associated with kingship, magic, protection, and motherhood. Greek writers and worshippers associated her with Greek goddesses, especially Demeter and Aphrodite.
Herodotus: Herodotus was a Greek historian of the fifth century BCE whose work describes peoples, customs, and conflicts. His accounts repeatedly compare foreign gods with Greek ones, including Egyptian deities with Greek counterparts.
Alexandria: Alexandria was a city founded by Alexander the Great in Egypt and later the capital of the Ptolemaic Kingdom. Its mixed population and royal institutions fostered cults that joined Greek and Egyptian elements.
Theonym: A theonym is the proper name of a deity. Comparisons often preserved local theonyms alongside Greek divine names.
Serapis: Serapis is a Greco-Egyptian deity whose cult was promoted in Ptolemaic Egypt. His cult deliberately joined Egyptian religious traditions with Greek forms and imagery.
Hellenistic period: The Hellenistic period followed Alexander the Great’s conquests and saw Greek language and culture spread across a wide region. Expanded Greek rule and contact made cross-cultural divine comparisons especially visible.
Ptolemy I Soter: Ptolemy I Soter was a Macedonian general of Alexander the Great and the founder of the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt. His reign is associated with the establishment of Serapis’s state-supported cult.
Syncretism: Syncretism is the combination or blending of elements from different religious traditions. Repeated identifications could foster religious combinations beyond simple translation.
Amun: Amun is an ancient Egyptian god who became a major deity of kingship and creation. Greeks identified him with Zeus, giving rise to the name Zeus Ammon.
