Intersection

An intersection is a place where two or more roads meet or cross, allowing traffic to move between them.

Traffic signal: A device that assigns right of way to traffic using colored lights. Signals separate conflicting movements in busy intersections by giving different users turns.
Road: A prepared route for vehicles, bicycles, or other forms of travel between places. An intersection forms where roads connect or cross.
Road safety: The practice and study of preventing deaths and injuries in road transport. Intersection crashes are a major focus of road-safety analysis and intervention.
Grade separation: A design that lets roads or railways cross at different heights without intersecting directly. It removes crossing conflicts by replacing an at-grade intersection with bridges or tunnels.
Stop sign: A traffic-control sign requiring drivers to stop before proceeding when safe. Stop signs assign priority where signals are unnecessary or a road has lower traffic volume.
Road junction: A point where two or more roads connect or cross. This broader term includes intersections and other ways roads join.
Level of service: A grading of transportation facility performance based on factors such as delay and congestion. Intersection delay is commonly assessed using level-of-service measures.
Interchange: A system of ramps and structures that connects roads at different levels. Unlike an ordinary intersection, an interchange routes turning traffic without direct crossing.
Roundabout: A circular intersection where entering traffic yields to vehicles already circulating. Its one-way circulation replaces direct crossing movements with merging and exiting.
Crosswalk: A marked or designated part of a road for pedestrians to cross. Crosswalks carry pedestrian movements across intersection approaches.
