Knowra Interstitial cystitis Interstitial cystitis Interstitial cystitis, also called bladder pain syndrome, is a chronic condition marked by bladder-related pain or pressure and urinary frequency or urgency without an identifiable infection or other cause.
Bladder urothelium : The specialized epithelial lining that separates urine from bladder tissue and helps regulate the bladder’s barrier. Barrier disruption is one proposed contributor to bladder sensitivity and pain.
Bladder pain syndrome : A chronic syndrome of bladder-related pain, pressure, or discomfort with urinary symptoms and no identified cause. It is the broader clinical name often used for interstitial cystitis.
Bladder training : A behavioral method that gradually changes urination intervals and responses to urgency. A symptom diary and individualized schedule can help manage frequency.
Endometriosis : A chronic disorder in which tissue resembling the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. Pelvic pain and urinary symptoms can overlap, but cyclic patterns may point elsewhere.
Pelvic floor dysfunction : Impaired relaxation, coordination, or function of the muscles supporting the pelvic organs. Pelvic muscle tenderness and dysfunction commonly accompany bladder pain symptoms.
Lower urinary tract symptoms : Symptoms involving urination, including frequency, urgency, hesitancy, and incomplete emptying. Frequency and urgency place the condition within this wider symptom group.
Pelvic floor physical therapy : Therapy using assessment and treatment of pelvic muscles, movement, and coordination. Manual techniques may help when pelvic floor tenderness or tightness contributes to symptoms.
Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome : Persistent pelvic or genitourinary pain in men, often with urinary or sexual symptoms and no proven bacterial infection. It is a related pain syndrome that can present with bladder-region discomfort.
Central sensitization : Increased responsiveness of the central nervous system to sensory input, which can amplify pain. Pain amplification may help explain persistent symptoms despite the absence of infection.
Urinary urgency : A sudden, compelling need to urinate that is difficult to defer. Urgency may accompany bladder pain even when the bladder is not full.
