Intertidal zone

The coastal area between the high-tide and low-tide marks, alternately exposed to air and submerged by seawater. Its organisms endure rapid changes in moisture, temperature, salinity, and wave force.

Tides: The periodic rise and fall of sea level, driven mainly by the Moon’s and Sun’s gravitational forces. Tidal cycles determine when intertidal habitats are submerged or exposed.
Littoral zone: The coastal region influenced by tides, extending across areas periodically submerged or exposed. The intertidal zone is the part of the littoral region between high and low water.
Rocky intertidal ecology: The study of organisms and ecological interactions on rocky shores between high and low tide. It provides a well-studied setting for testing how physical stress shapes communities.
Ecological succession: The change in species composition and community structure over time at a site. Colonization and disturbance can drive succession on newly exposed or altered shore surfaces.
Chthamalus stellatus: A barnacle species found on rocky shores in the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. Its upper-shore distribution helped demonstrate how physical stress limits species ranges.
Tidal range: The vertical difference between high and low water levels at a coast. Its size sets the vertical extent of the intertidal zone.
Rocky shore: A coastal habitat with exposed bedrock, boulders, or other hard surfaces. Hard surfaces provide attachment sites for many conspicuous intertidal organisms.
Barnacle: A marine crustacean that attaches permanently to hard surfaces and encloses itself in calcareous plates. Barnacles are common intertidal organisms whose distributions reveal limits set by exposure and competition.
Keystone species: A species whose ecological effects are disproportionately large relative to its abundance. Predators such as sea stars can determine which competitors dominate intertidal communities.
Semibalanus balanoides: A barnacle species common on temperate North Atlantic rocky shores. Its competition with other barnacles became central to experiments on intertidal zonation.
