Knowra Intimacy Intimacy Intimacy is closeness marked by personal knowledge, emotional openness, or shared private experience. It can develop in romantic, familial, friendly, and other relationships.
Self-disclosure : The act of sharing personal information, feelings, or experiences with another person. Sharing private thoughts can increase closeness when the other person responds with care.
Emotional intimacy : Closeness built through sharing and responding to feelings, needs, and personal experiences. It is one central form of intimacy, grounded in emotional openness.
Romantic love : A form of affection involving romantic attraction and, often, a desire for a distinctive partnership. Romantic love may include intimacy, but attraction and commitment are separate dimensions.
Relationship satisfaction : A person's overall evaluation of the quality and fulfillment of a relationship. Feeling close and understood is one dimension associated with satisfaction in close relationships.
Perceived partner responsiveness : The belief that another person understands, values, and cares for one's needs and feelings. Feeling understood and cared for helps turn disclosure into intimacy.
Physical intimacy : Closeness expressed through physical presence or touch, which may or may not be sexual. Touch can express closeness, but physical intimacy does not always entail emotional or sexual intimacy.
Commitment : A decision or intention to maintain a relationship or pursue a course of action. A relationship can be committed without deep openness, or intimate without formal commitment.
Intimate partner violence : Physical, sexual, or psychological harm inflicted by a current or former intimate partner. A close relationship does not guarantee safety; intimacy and coercion can coexist.
Trust : A willingness to rely on another person based on expectations of their reliability or goodwill. Openness becomes less risky when each person expects the other to treat vulnerability responsibly.
Sexual intimacy : Closeness associated with sexual interaction, desire, or shared sexual expression. It can overlap with intimacy without defining every close relationship.
