Intramuscular injection

Intramuscular injection delivers medicine through a needle into skeletal muscle, where it may act locally or enter the bloodstream for systemic effect.

Skeletal muscle: Voluntary, striated muscle attached to the skeleton and composed of bundles of contractile fibers. Its tissue is the intended destination for the injected medicine.
Vaccination: The administration of a vaccine to stimulate protective immunity against an infectious disease. Many vaccines are formulated for delivery into muscle.
Aseptic technique: Practices that prevent contamination by disease-causing microorganisms during a procedure. Clean preparation and handling reduce infection risk during injection.
Intravenous therapy: Treatment delivered directly into a vein, placing a medicine immediately into the bloodstream. Unlike muscle injection, it provides direct vascular access and generally faster systemic delivery.
Injection site reaction: A local response near an injection site, such as pain, redness, swelling, or tenderness. Local discomfort is among the common effects after muscle injection.
Needle gauge: A measurement of needle diameter in which a higher gauge number indicates a thinner needle. Gauge affects needle penetration and the force needed to deliver a viscous medicine.
Depot injection: An injection formulated to release medicine gradually over an extended period. Some intramuscular formulations create a reservoir that prolongs drug release.
Medication dosage: The quantity of a medicine prescribed or administered at one time or over a specified period. The prescribed dose constrains the volume and concentration delivered into muscle.
Intradermal injection: An injection that places a small amount of substance within the dermis, the skin's inner layer. It targets skin rather than the deeper muscle tissue.
Needle-stick injury: An accidental puncture of skin by a used needle or other sharp medical instrument. Handling injection equipment can expose workers to injury and bloodborne pathogens.
