Intranet
An intranet is a private network within an organization that uses internet technologies to share information and services among authorized users.
Internet Protocol Suite: The layered protocols that enable devices to communicate across interconnected networks. Intranets use the same core networking protocols as the public internet.
Web Portal: A website that gathers links, information, and services from multiple sources in one interface. Many intranets present internal tools and announcements through a central portal.
Knowledge Management: The practices and systems used to create, organize, share, and apply organizational knowledge. Intranets provide a shared channel for preserving and distributing workplace knowledge.
Internet: The global system of interconnected computer networks that communicate using standard protocols. Unlike the public internet, an intranet restricts access to an organization's authorized users.
Organizational Memory: The knowledge and experience an organization retains in people, records, routines, and systems. Intranet archives can preserve policies and institutional knowledge beyond individual employees.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol: The application protocol used to transfer web resources between clients and servers. Internal websites commonly deliver pages and services over HTTP or HTTPS.
Content Management System: Software for creating, organizing, editing, and publishing digital content. Content management systems let staff maintain intranet pages without coding.
Employee Self-Service: Digital tools that let employees manage routine administrative tasks without staff intervention. Intranet portals often provide access to leave, benefits, and payroll services.
Extranet: A private network that gives selected external parties access to organizational resources. An extranet extends access to partners or customers; an intranet is primarily internal.
Information Silo: A repository or system whose information is difficult to access from other parts of an organization. Disconnected intranet sites can reproduce the information silos they are meant to reduce.
