Knowra Intravenous therapy Intravenous therapy Intravenous therapy delivers fluids, medications, blood products, or nutrients directly into a vein through a vascular access device. It enables rapid systemic delivery and precise control of infusion.
Intravenous catheter : A flexible tube inserted into a vein to provide vascular access for treatment or monitoring. It is the access device through which most intravenous therapies enter the bloodstream.
Fluid replacement therapy : Treatment that restores water and electrolytes lost through illness, injury, or inadequate intake. Intravenous fluids can restore circulating volume when oral replacement is insufficient or impractical.
Venous access : Access to a vein for administering treatment, drawing blood, or monitoring circulation. Intravenous therapy depends on establishing and maintaining a usable route into a vein.
Oral administration : Delivery of a medication by mouth for absorption through the gastrointestinal tract. Oral treatment avoids vascular access but depends on swallowing and gastrointestinal absorption.
Infusion pump : A device that controls the rate and volume of fluid delivered through an infusion line. It regulates delivery when gravity flow is too imprecise or medication requires controlled dosing.
Intravenous medication administration : The delivery of a drug directly into a vein, as a bolus or controlled infusion. This route is used when rapid effect, reliable delivery, or sustained dosing is needed.
Aseptic technique : Practices that prevent contamination by disease-causing microorganisms during clinical procedures. Sterile handling of catheters and connections reduces the chance of introducing pathogens.
Intramuscular injection : Delivery of a substance into muscle tissue using a needle. It offers an injectable alternative but generally does not provide continuous venous infusion.
Intravenous fluid : A sterile solution administered into a vein to provide water, electrolytes, or other dissolved substances. These solutions are among the most common substances delivered by intravenous therapy.
Blood transfusion : The transfer of donated blood or blood components into a recipient’s circulation. Transfusions use intravenous access to replace red cells, platelets, or plasma.
