Inuktitut

Inuktitut is an Inuit language spoken across much of the Canadian Arctic, especially in Nunavut and Nunavik. It has multiple regional varieties and is written using both syllabics and the Latin alphabet.

Inuit languages: A language family spoken by Inuit communities across Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. Inuktitut is one member of this wider family, alongside closely related regional languages.
Nunavut: A territory in northern Canada established in 1999, with a majority Inuit population. Inuktitut is an official language of Nunavut and widely used in territorial life.

Polysynthesis: A linguistic pattern in which words combine many meaningful elements, often expressing what other languages convey in whole sentences. Inuktitut forms complex words by attaching grammatical endings and incorporating meaningful stems.
Nunavik: A region of northern Quebec inhabited mainly by Inuit communities. Nunavik is a major Inuktitut-speaking region with its own local varieties and institutions.
Inuit migration: The historical movement of Inuit peoples across Arctic regions of North America and Greenland. Migration and settlement produced the wide geographic distribution of Inuktitut varieties.
Inuvialuktun: A collective name for Inuit language varieties spoken in the western Canadian Arctic. Its western varieties contrast with the eastern forms usually meant by Inuktitut in Canada.
Agglutinative language: A language that builds words by adding sequences of affixes, each typically expressing a distinct grammatical meaning. Its strings of suffixes make Inuktitut a familiar example of agglutinative word formation.
Inuktitut education: Teaching and learning through Inuktitut in schools and other educational settings. School language choices affect whether children acquire and use Inuktitut alongside English or French.
