Invariant theory

Invariant theory studies functions and other algebraic quantities unchanged by group actions. It connects symmetry with polynomial algebra, geometry, and representation theory.

Group action: A group action is a systematic way for a group to transform the elements of a set. Invariants are defined by asking which quantities remain fixed under these transformations.
Invariant ring: An invariant ring is the subring of a ring consisting of elements fixed by a group action. It collects all polynomial functions unchanged by the acting group.
Binary form: A binary form is a homogeneous polynomial in two variables. Classical invariant theory first developed around invariants of binary forms.
Geometric invariant theory: Geometric invariant theory constructs quotient spaces for algebraic group actions using invariant functions and stability conditions. It extends invariant rings into a framework for constructing moduli spaces.
Hilbert's fourteenth problem: Hilbert's fourteenth problem asks whether certain subalgebras of rational function fields are finitely generated. It exposes the failure of finite generation in general invariant-theoretic settings.
Invariant (mathematics): An invariant is a quantity or structure preserved by a specified transformation or family of transformations. Invariant theory studies such preserved quantities algebraically.
Orbit (group theory): An orbit is the set of points obtainable from one point under a group action. Invariant functions are constant across each orbit.
James Joseph Sylvester: James Joseph Sylvester was a British mathematician who helped develop invariant theory and matrix theory. His work on invariants of forms helped establish the subject's classical methods.
Moduli space: A moduli space parametrizes objects of a given type up to specified notions of equivalence. Invariant theory helps build moduli spaces by identifying objects related by symmetry.
Nagata's counterexample: Nagata's counterexample is a finitely generated algebraic group action with a non-finitely generated invariant ring. It answered Hilbert's fourteenth problem negatively in a broad setting.
