Invasion of the Waikato

A British military campaign fought in the Waikato region of New Zealand from 1863 to 1864 against Māori forces, especially those aligned with the Kīngitanga.

Great South Road: A road built south from Auckland to support British military operations in the Waikato. It carried troops and supplies toward the invasion front.
Kīngitanga: A Māori political movement established in the 1850s to unite iwi under a Māori monarch. The colonial government viewed its authority and resistance as a challenge to Crown sovereignty.
Duncan Cameron: A British general who commanded imperial forces during the Waikato campaign. He directed the principal British advance and major engagements.
Waikato Raupatu Claims Settlement Act 1995: A New Zealand law giving effect to a Crown settlement with Waikato-Tainui over confiscated lands and historical grievances. It formalized an apology and settlement for the invasion and raupatu.
