Investiture Controversy

The Investiture Controversy was a late 11th- and early 12th-century struggle between the papacy and European rulers over authority to appoint bishops and other church officials.

Lay investiture: The appointment or installation of church officials by secular rulers. The practice at the center of the dispute gave rulers influence over episcopal office.
Gregory VII: Pope from 1073 to 1085 who asserted strong papal authority over church and secular rulers. His conflict with Henry IV became the controversy’s defining confrontation.
Ottonian system: A system in which German kings relied on bishops and abbots as administrators and political allies. Its close alliance of royal and ecclesiastical office shaped imperial expectations about appointments.
Concordat of London: A 1107 agreement between Henry I of England and Anselm of Canterbury on episcopal appointments. It established an English compromise before the imperial settlement at Worms.
Dictatus papae: A collection of assertions about papal authority recorded in the papal register of 1075. Its claims articulated the papacy’s challenge to secular control of church appointments.
Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor: Holy Roman Emperor from 1084 to 1105 and king of Germany from 1054 to 1105. His resistance to Gregory VII turned the appointment dispute into an imperial crisis.
Simony: The buying or selling of spiritual offices or ecclesiastical privileges. Reformers condemned simony alongside lay control of church offices.
