Investiture

Investiture is the formal installation of a person in an office or the conferral of its authority. In medieval Europe, it especially involved appointing bishops and other church officials.

Lay investiture: The appointment or installation of a church official by a secular ruler. This practice brought royal power directly into the appointment of bishops and abbots.
Otto I: The first Holy Roman Emperor, crowned in 962, who strengthened royal control over the German church. His use of bishops as royal administrators helped establish the political background to later disputes.
Pope Urban II: Pope from 1088 to 1099 who continued the Gregorian reform movement. He sustained papal opposition to lay investiture after Gregory VII's death.
