Investor

An investor commits money or other resources to an asset or venture in expectation of financial returns, accepting uncertainty about the outcome.

Return on investment: A measure comparing the gain or loss from an investment with its cost. Investors use expected and realized returns to judge whether an investment merits its resources.
Stockholder: A person or organization that owns shares in a corporation. Buying shares makes an investor a partial owner of a company.
Speculation: The assumption of substantial financial risk in pursuit of profit from uncertain price changes. Investing and speculation overlap, but speculation often centers on short-term price movements.
Corporate governance: The system of rules and practices by which a company is directed and controlled. Shareholders can influence oversight and decisions through voting and engagement.
Financial market: A system in which financial assets are issued and traded. Investors use markets to buy, sell, and price many investment assets.
Investment risk: The possibility that an investment will produce losses or returns different from expectations. Every investment exposes its funder to uncertainty about outcomes.
Bondholder: A person or organization that owns a bond and is entitled to its contractual payments. Bond investment provides lending-based returns rather than corporate ownership.
Trading: The buying and selling of financial instruments or other assets. An investor may hold assets for returns, while a trader focuses on transactions and price changes.
Shareholder activism: The use of ownership rights by investors to influence a company's policies or management. Activist investors press companies to change strategy, governance, or capital allocation.
Portfolio: A collection of financial investments held by an individual or organization. An investor's holdings together form a portfolio.
